Meandering of the Spiral Tip: An Alternative Approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
Meandering of a one-armed spiral tip has been noted in chemical reactions and numerical simulations. Barkley, Kness, and Tuckerman show that meandering can begin by Hopf bifurcation from a rigidly rotating spiral wave (a point that is verified in a B-Z reaction by Li, Ouyang, Petrov, and Swinney). At the codimension-two point where (in an appropriate sense) the frequency at Hopf bifurcation equals the frequency of the spiral wave, Barkley notes that spiral tip meandering can turn to linearly translating spiral tip motion. Barkley also presents a model showing that the linear motion of the spiral tip is a resonance phenomenon, and this point is verified experimentally by Li et al. and proved rigorously by Wulff. In this paper we suggest an alternative development of Barkley’s model extending the center bundle constructions of Krupa from compact groups to noncompact groups and from finite dimensions to function spaces. Our reduction works only under certain simplifying assumptions which are not valid for Euclidean group actions. Recent work of Sandstede, Scheel, and Wulff shows how to overcome these difficulties. This approach allows us to consider various bifurcations from a rotating wave. In particular, we analyze the codimension-two Barkley bifurcation and the codimensiontwo Takens-Bogdanov bifurcation from a rotating wave. We also discuss Hopf bifurcation from a many-armed spiral showing that meandering and resonant linear motion of the spiral tip do not always occur.

Common mechanism links spiral wave meandering and wave-front–obstacle separation
Spiral waves rotate either around a circular core or meander, inscribing a noncircular pattern. The medium properties determining the transition of meandering were found to be equivalent to those defining the transition from wave tip separation and attachment around the end of an unexcitable strip of thickness comparable to zero velocity wave-front thickness. The transition from circular to non...

Meandering spiral tips in homogeneous reaction-diffusion systems are characterized by two generically incommensurate radii and frequencies. Here, we create periodic perturbations in space to induce a transition to commensurate radii and frequencies that exhibit a devil's staircase. The plateaus of the staircase correspond to pinned or complex periodic orbits of the spiral tip.

Rotating spiral waves have been observed in numerous biological and physical systems. These spiral waves can be stationary, meander, or even degenerate into multiple unstable rotating waves. The spatiotemporal behavior of spiral waves has been extensively quantified by tracking spiral wave tip trajectories. However, the precise methodology of identifying the spiral wave tip and its influence on...

Inhibition of the atrial ultra-rapid delayed rectifier potassium current (I Kur) represents a promising therapeutic strategy in the therapy of atrial fibrillation. However, experimental and clinical data on the antiarrhythmic efficacy remain controversial. We tested the hypothesis that antiarrhythmic effects of I Kur inhibitors are dependent on kinetic properties of channel blockade. A mathemat...
